about

The late Neil Buie, Woodsman, found a fascination with Texas Blues in his latter years, lived in a shack, smoke and drank, and boiled crab legs. He had a knack for rhyme and composition, and we worked together in those times.

As part of his fascination, he came upon Blind Willie Johnson of Marlin, Texas, a street performing gospel singer who challenged the world with his views and music in the early 20th century. This piece is a tribute to Willie's legacy.

lyrics

Some say he sang the holy blues
but I wouldn't know that tune
Blind Willie never read a book
Nor seen a rose in bloom
His fingers on those guitar strings
Only light that he ever knew

He bent those strings and moaned the blues
a nickle was the price
A cold and lonesome sound it was
chilled my soul like ice

On a cold and lonesome street corner

Through the ends of the universe
His guitar like a beacon shown
through the darkest night on earth

Dark was the night
Cold was the ground
On that cross they laid our saviour down

Some say he sang the holy blues
but I wouldn't know that tune
Blind Willie never read a book
Nor seen a rose in bloom
