Four wheels and night long deals to Polvo
gonna make some money in them hills
but I got stopped at the Red Crossing
in Polvo
where they put the border in the river
they were hidin' behind the ole ocotillo
dug down deep in the barren arroyo
cause you know the water ain't come in a few years

there were bullets flyin'
and I was ridin' like the wind
up the Sierra Rico
and I thought that this might be the end

Loose gravel and sure hooves don't always match
and I spent some time down in that cactus patch

only the good die young, I guess that's why I've been around so long

Years ago in a cavern I stayed
with a Comanche woman, in a small cave
her lips were sweet and the time there I cherished
yet I left her alone in those ruins to perish
the weight of that woman would bear a man down
as will the far lonesome sound
of the coyote in the hills
and the water that spills from the last drinking cup
when there's none to be found

I returned to that cave where I buried her memory
in exhaustion I lay me down
in the dream she came as a lion
now all's that's left is my soul
haunting the mountains

only the good die young, I guess that's why I've been around so long
